May in the Salon
Original vintage French oil on canvas by Provencal artist Georges COULOMB (1947-2022). An expressionist still life with an interior featuring a vase with lilac flowers on a table, and an armchair. Executed in bold colors through a subjective interpretation and unique perspective, the painting is an ode to late spring. Reminding of painters like Paul Gauguin, a prominent figure in the post-Impressionist movement who was equally known for his use of color, COULOMB did not shy away from using deep red to render the armchair, and rich purple for the bouquet of lilac flowers, creating an enchanting contrast between the blooms and the furniture. A statement piece masterfully executed in expressive brushwork.
COULOMB was widely seen as an ambassador of the Provencal art school. Born in Port-de-Bouc in Southeast France, he lived his entire life in the region and, as a self-taught artist, took inspiration from the nature and objects that surrounded him. COULOMB founded a local group named “Formes et Couleurs” (“Shapes and Colors”) that promoted painting and sculpture and, quite aptly, he dazzled through color during his career as a painter.
In black and gold wood frame and in excellent vintage condition.
63.5 x 79 cm (image) • 25 x 31 in
78.5 x 94.5 cm (frame) • 31 x 37 in
