Original vintage French oil on canvas by Henri DÉZIRÉ (1878-1965), signed lower right. A light-filled landscape depicting a row of poplars in perspective, with their shadows falling on the green grass in the foreground. Their golden silhouettes mix in with lively green hues, indicating a scene at the beginning of autumn, when signs of summer still linger in nature. The lushness of the grass, and the clear blue sky are a testament to it. In the center of the painting, a village adds a human touch with its whitewashed houses, and pink and brown rooftops.

DÉZIRÉ was born towards the end of the 19th century near Bordeaux in South West France. His father was a foundry worker, a trade which he learned himself before being noticed by an architect for his artistic talent. His drawings won him an introduction to William Bouguereau, professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Académie Julian. It is Bouguereau who helped him obtain a scholarship funded by the city of La Rochelle, where DÉZIRÉ moved to in his early youth, allowing him to be admitted at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1899.

In Paris, DÉZIRÉ found a studio in Montparnasse, where he launched his career. His success in later years was crowned through several prizes, among which the Prix Puvis de Chavannes (1938), Prix Gillot-Dard (1939), Prix Dulac (1948), and Prix Bastien Lepage (1958). He exhibited at salons in France and abroad (Germany, Italy, Belgium, United States), and his paintings have been bought both by the French state and individual collectors. Museums that have displayed his works include the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Centre Georges Pompidou.
